Bournemouth schools ahead of the game.
Many of the schools in Bournemouth already doing extra to teach sex education in schools. The Reverend Robin Nash from St Alban’s church in Charminster said “I know that many teachers both in state and church school go beyond what is required by the curriculum.”
This comes after the government announced plans that all children should attend sex and relationship lessons from the age of 5, Rev Nash said “as far as the new legislation is concerned that will now be a requirement.”
When asked whether he supported the new proposals Rev Nash said “I think it’s a very good idea, children of that young age 5 or 6 years are often silly and giggly about the private parts of their bodies… explaining things at that age is a very good grounding”
The government proposal will require children from 5 to learn about different parts of their bodies and the emotions that people feel. Lessons on contraception and STD’s will be left until secondary education. Rev Nash added “you’re certainly not going to be talking to a 5 or 6 year old in the same way as a 15 or 16 year old”
A new review, to be chaired by Sir Alasdair MacDonald a headteacher based in London will now decide how to incorporate sex education into the compulsory PSHE programme.

Parade and Attractions draw Shoppers to Poole
The Bournemouth Christmas Parade attracted thousands of shoppers to the centre of Poole on Sunday despite the economic gloom.
Santa’s arrival at the Poole Quayside, courtesy of RNLI lifeboats, has given charities and local shops a boost amidst fears of a slow Christmas. Town centre manager Richard Randle-Jones said “It's purpose is to celebrate the coming of Christmas and to kick start Christmas Shopping in Poole.”
The parade that included ‘The Dolphin Marching band’ and stars from the Lighthouse panto Dick Wittington, gathered at the Quayside to await Santa’s arrival. Over 25,000 people watched the event with crowds up more that 10,000 than the previous Sunday. Reindeer keeper Ed Halligan, 30 said “this is our third parade already this year.” The Reindeer came all the way from Ashford in Kent and included two that were only 6 months old.
Money raised from the parade will go to the children’s charity Julia’s House, volunteer co-ordinator June Maidment said “the generosity of Poole people and the money from the collection will be a terrific help in the care we can provide to our families.”
Mr Randle-Jones said “My objective this year is get an extra 200,000 people shopping in Poole this Christmas and this is why Poole is attracting families with the Children's rides and the Ice Rink.” Bethan Trick, 30, a Jewellery expert from ‘Past Times’ agreed “its gets people in the Christmas spirit and since they brought the rides and the stalls we have noticed a marked increase in sales.”
However not all shops feel that the boost from the parade will last, Carol Childs, 35, from Morton’s Gift Shop said “there is a ten minute mad period but then they all disappear.” Mrs Childs added that many shops liked to think it boosted trade but were not convinced, “these days it’s hard to encourage people down to this part of the town.” Mr Randle-Jones also expressed concern “The higher fuel prices have reduced the number of people travelling from far away to other towns to spend their money on shopping.”
To donate to Julia’s House you can visit www.julias-house.org/ or phone 01202 607400. To contact ‘The Reindeer Centre’ or to adopt a Reindeer you can visit www.reindeercentre.co.uk or phone 01233 820545.

We PC - Just a Gimmick?
The Head Engineer from SPD computers in Bournemouth has labelled the new Intel and ASUS website, wepc.com as “just a gimmick”.
Nathan Stafford, 28 said “it’s not going to do anything really, they want their work done for free.” He also voiced concerns that if a member of the public came up with a good idea that it would just be exploited. Mr Stafford added “When it comes to the insides they haven’t got a say it’s down to the designers.”
Wepc.com which launched just under two weeks ago by Intel and ASUS challenges the public to “help shape the future of the PC.” One idea put forward by forum member ‘sivious’ was a solar powered notebook, however Mr Stafford suggests that this is simply not feasible.
SPD computers specialises in custom made PCs for the public and runs it's own system builder online, Mr Stafford said “they can search the whole market and we get that for them.”
It also seems that with the downturn in the economy people are looking to maintain their current computer systems rather than imagine new ones. Mr Stafford said “we are not selling the high end systems and have seen a huge increase in the repairs.”
To contact SPD computers you can visit their website at www.ezcomputers.co.uk/ or call 01202 267267. To dream up your own PC you can visit www.wepc.com/

Shanghai Masters
Update
Early this morning the final event of the 2008 tennis tour began with the best 8 players competing for the Shanghai Masters title. The Gold group started the tournament with world no.3 Novak Djokovic defeating Juan Martin Del Potro 7-5 6-3, before the often maligned Nikolay Davydenko came through a tough three set battle with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Preview
Scotland's Andrew Murray begins his campaign on Monday and faces world no.6 Andrew Roddick. While this is the first time that Murray has qualified for this event Mr. Roddick has been ever present, qualifying every year since 2003. (Although he withdrew from the 2005 tournament due to injury) Murray goes into the match with a 4-2 record against Roddick including victory in their only match this year in Miami.
The other match in the Red groups pits the Four-time champion and world no.2 Roger Federer against the world no.9 Gilles Simon of France. Simon, who only came into the tournament after Rafael Nadal withdraw earlier this week, defeated Federer earlier this year in Montreal in their only meeting to date. However after Federer's victory at the U.S Open he will again be a strong favourite to win the match.
Results:
N. Djokovic def J. Del Porto 7-5 6-3
N. Davydenko def J. Tsonga 6-7 6-4 7-6
